Fiscal Policy Solutions

Fiscal policy solutions should not be a matter of Republicans versus Democrats. Our current political irresponsibility, if continued, will threaten our future economic stability. Reform of our entitlement spending is desperately needed; unfortunately, our current political atmosphere in Washington has made that near impossible. Ultimately however, the answer may lie in America’s voting public. After all, in a representative democracy like America, politician generally do what their constituents demand of them.

Solutions

Demand politicians to reform entitlement programs and the current tax system

Demand politicians to reform entitlement programs and the current tax system. People must contact their representatives, and demand action.  Voters should take the first step in breaking the partisan divide by encouraging political leaders within their parties to develop bi-partisan solutions.

Politicians have to take an active role in breaking the partisan divide

Politicians have to take an active role in breaking the partisan divide.  As long as politicians base their platforms and policies on partisan politics very little will be accomplished. Democrats and Republicans must come to a consensus if the US economy is to be steered away from the fiscal abyss to which it is heading.

Educate themselves and others on these issues so to avoid misinformation

Educate themselves and others on these issues so to avoid misinformation. Politicians and lobbying groups are usually tempted to personalize and exaggerate reforms in order to gain support. They can use false or misleading information to support their point of view. If voters are not educated on these subjects they will be easily convinced to oppose any reforms.

They should encourage reforms that will distribute the burden of paying for the debt equally between generations. In other words, benefits for Baby Boomers should not be drastically cut, nor should taxes on future generations be suddenly increased. It should be a matter of compromise between both generations.
