Despite the presence of economic solutions, numerous
political limitations restrain progress on reducing our federal deficit. Several
factors hindering deficit reduction are a lack of political cooperation due to
bitter partisan environment, the inability of either party to
adhere to their traditional economic ideologies, and immense public
approval of entitlement programs. However, the most impeding
political limitation to solving the federal deficit crisis is the public’s lack
of understanding and awareness.
Deficit politics address the legitimacy of the deficit, the question of who will pay for it, and
the economic repercussions that will occur due to deficit growth. Until
constituents begin to concern themselves with the federal deficit, this economic
crisis will not likely be addressed in the political arena. In the words
of Senate Budget Committee Adviser
“One
way you get a congressman’s attention is by affecting his electoral prospects.”
-Jim Klumpner: Senate Budget Committee Advisor
