FY 180 "Science in Medicine"
Course
Description
The proposal should be a formal request to be considered by
the faculty involved in the decision, and it should include a brief philosophy
and outline of the course as you envision teaching it if you are selected.
There are not many guidelines. We encourage you, after four years of college
and three years of medical school, to reflect upon the process of learning to
be a physician; how it has changed your perspective, and what aspects of
medicine do you think will have impact on a group of college freshman when
passed through the lens of your personal experience. It is an eighth block
course, and a seminar at that, but a successful proposal will likely contain
some elements of intellectual rigor.
The choice of instructor will be based upon your course
proposal, syllabus and the letters of recommendation that you solicit for this
endeavor.
The budget for this class is $400-450/block. Previous application
of course funds has included field trips, a CC cabin trip, and speakers
(honorariums), as well as photocopying of course materials.
Please understand that we usually have to make a very
difficult decision in choosing the instructor for this one course. All of you
in your third year of medical school are very accomplished, and each merits the
opportunity to come back and teach at CC. We will make every effort to insure a
timely decision in this process so you can complete your plans for your fourth
year of medical school. As always, the letters of reference are generally the
bottleneck in this process.
