Student
Organizations
There
are two CCCA chartered organizations in which students interested
in the Health Professions may participate.
Health
Professions Club - HPC
Health
Professions Club – CCCA organization for and run
by students interested in the health professions. Health Professions
Club (HPC) provides additional
resources,
guidance, and advice to students intending to follow a career
in the health professions, (Dental, Medical, Optometry, Nursing,
Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Veterinary).
The club sponsors mock interviews with local doctors, workshops
in resume and personal statement
writing, brings speakers to campus, and provides additional opportunities
for involvement through fundraising.
Recent
speakers brought to campus were representatives from Princeton
Review, Kaplan, the Army, the Navy, CU Admissions, various university
representatives and current medical students. In conjunction
with the Health
Professions Advising Office, additional club functions include
trips to the CU Medical Days. HPC is committed to hosting
benefits for Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization of doctors
who travel around the world providing free surgery. In the past,
fundraisers have comprised of Run for Smiles. In 2004,
an annual benefit concert with dessert/food bar was launched.
CC
acappella groups have provided the musical entertainment.
The
club meets once a month, at noon, on the second Thursday of the
block. Meetings are open to all students interested in learning
more about careers in health professions, becoming a member,
helping with club functions. HPC emphasizes making a
difference on the Colorado College campus and in Colorado Springs
by providing
connects to health professionals within the community.

MAPS – Minority Association of Pre-Health
Students
MAPS
(Minority Association of Pre-Health Students) is targeted towards
undergraduate students interested in the health professions (including
Allied Health professions). Through a partnership between local
SNMA (Student National Medical Association) chapters and other
undergraduate students interested in health related careers,
the MAPS program aims to increase the matriculation of underrepresented
students into health professions and related programs. This partnership
primarily serves as an academic support system that provides
information on how undergraduates may establish themselves as
competitive candidates for medical school early in their undergraduate
career. CU Health Sciences Center has the closest SNMA chapter
and the Office of Diversity is the minority student advocate.
The
main goal of the CC MAPS group is to inform students of what
medical schools are looking for by talking with medical school
representatives and students who have gone through the medical
school selection process.
MAPS
meets at least once a block and the meetings are open to anyone,
but they are especially for underrepresented minority students
interested in pursuing a career in health.
