Science
in Medicine
FY
180
Science
in Medicine, FY180 is a course offered to first
year CC students who are interested in preparing for a career
in the
health professions during 8th block. The instructor for this
course is selected from among our graduates who will be in their
fourth
year of medical school at the time the course is offered. This
course will provide an opportunity to first year
students to explore the health profession field through
the perspective of a CC graduate.
As
the instructor, we encourage you to reflect upon the process
of learning to be a physician.
How it has changed your perspective and what aspects of
medicine do you think will have an impact on a group of first
year college
students when passed through the lens of your personal experience.
Each year the course content has varied since the instructor
is free to create his or her own syllabus. Some instructors have
adopted
a textbook for the course, while others have relied on handout
materials, films and limited laboratory experience. Guest lecturers
from
CU medical school and visits to the medical school and local
hospitals have often been features of the course.
The
Health Profession Advising Office sends out letters of invitation
to those who should be eligible to apply, according to the HPA
records. Selection of the Science
in Medicine instructor
is based upon a formal proposal that includes a brief philosophy
and outline of the course as you envision teaching it if you
are selected along with two letters of recommendation solicited
for this endeavor.
Samples
of course syllabi from previous years are from: Peter
Shepard who taught in 2004, Doug
Jacobson who taught in 2005, Rhett
Mays who taught in 2006
and Katie
Kaufmann Myhre who taught in 2007. Allison Bukowski
will be teaching during 8th block 2008. Currently FY180 is not
scheduled to be taught in the 2008-09 academic year.
