Leisure & Recreation

While I was growing up, my father worked for Gulf Oil Corporation, and my family had to move frequently.  I think that learning to adjust to a wide variety of new environments, ranging from Jacksonville to Macon, Seoul to Philadelphia, Tallahassee to Houston, made me interested in travel.  And my parents, whose deep Georgia roots made them great advocates of history, took advantage of every opportunity to show my sister and me notable sites, such as colonial Williamsburg, ancient Athens, and historical Kyong-ju, which probably encouraged me to become a historian.

Bitten by Wanderlust, I pursued study at Austin, Berkeley, and Paris.  My academic positions enabled me to travel to Stillwater, New York City, and Colorado Springs.  My partner, Dennis McEnnerney (Colorado College, Department of Philosophy), enjoys travel almost as much as I do, and since returning to Colorado College, we have taken trips to Chichen Itza, Styria and Bavaria, and Rocky Mountain National Park.  We look forward in particular to continuing our exploration of the incredibly beautiful state of Colorado.

Dennis and I also enjoy a number of other recreation activities.  We love whitewater rafting, and we have season tickets to watch Colorado College’s great hockey rack up one victory after another!  We enjoy going to movies, and especially appreciate the annual Pike’s Peak Lavendar Film Festival.  And we LOVE food and drink!  This summer, we went with friends on a walking tour of Burgundy, home of some of the best French drinking and eating.
