The Canadian Federation
As a constitutional monarchy, the chief of the Canadian state is Queen Elizabeth of England. In the Queen's absence, the Governor General of Canada, his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, serves as chief of state. He splits his residence as Governor General between Rideau House in Ottawa and La Citadelle in Quebec City. The government of the Canadian federation, meanwhile, is directed by the Prime Minister of the Canadian Parliament. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen, based on a recommendation made by the Prime Minister.
